In this role, you will support the AIU in investigating reported crime that does not require a fast-time deployment and, in so doing, improve the quality of service provided to victims, identify vulnerability, threat, harm and risk that would otherwise have been missed and increase our front-line policing capacity. The main functions will be to undertake proportionate, timely, effective and victim focussed investigations; and support other investigations and enquiries.

Investigation Principle Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership for and investigate allocated offences in line with the Endeavour principles of crime investigation, seeking to achieve a formal outcome.
  • Discuss with the victim, from the beginning, their preferred outcome for the investigation, making best use of out of court disposals where that that is line with the victim’s wishes.
  • Complete timely, appropriate and necessary enquiries with victims and witnesses, making best use of technology including video call technology as appropriate.
  • Where necessary task Investigation Support Staff with evidence collation and review as part of the investigation process.
  • Adhere to the Victims Code, completing a VCC and referral to Victims First as required.
  • Identify and respond to any safeguarding issues in all interactions with members of the public. Make referrals where appropriate and escalate concerns if urgent action is required.
  • Conduct secondary investigation on other persons associated to the Niche occurrence ensuring referrals made to relevant departments and partners where necessary.
  • Ensure awareness of current crime trends, identifying where current investigation is linked to a pattern of offending or potential crime series.
  • Provide high quality, evidentially-sound, handover packages with all reasonable lines of enquiry complete for investigations identified as necessitating an arrest.
  • Where new information comes to light, ensure crime is still recorded in line with NCRS and HOCR and record any additional crimes that are identified. Ensure data quality on all relevant Niche occurrences, including linked crimes where appropriate.
  • Adhere to filing and finalisation processes process where no formal action is being taken.
  • Manage case workload based on the prioritisation set at triage stage but periodically apply the AIU triage criteria based on THOR principles, victim impact, vulnerability and reasonableness of lines of enquiry and flag where the prioritisation should be changed.
  • Work closely with supervisors to ensure workload capacity is maximised to ensure victims receive an appropriate level of service as recorded in the VCC.
  • Share expertise and local knowledge with colleagues. Make best use of technology and support your colleagues in doing the same. Mentor student officers and other new officers / police staff.
  • Support the overall department in transforming how TVP polices less serious volume crime with a view to optimising the service provided to the public.

Essential Role Based Training:

  • Assistance Crime Registrar (bespoke training for AIU)

Essential Training Prior to Appointment:

  • Competent in police computer systems relevant to the role, including Niche RMS, PNC

If you are currently in a Force critical post, there is an expectation that you will remain in that post for a minimum of two years before applying to change roles (or 18 months for custody sergeants).
