In this role you will be working in partnership with Youth Justice Services (YJS), educational establishments and partners to provide a safe and secure learning environment and to avoid unnecessary criminalisation of young people through crime reduction and prevention, engagement and safeguarding.

Driving the priorities of the Force Strategic Plan, this role will proactively work with children and young people, educational establishments, partner agencies, families and internal colleagues in order to maximise early intervention opportunities, increase safety, reduce the fear of crime and victimisation, and disrupt criminal activity by employing a variety of methods including educational, preventative, diversionary and enforcement tactics.

Increase positive encounters with young people and build trust by identifying what issues matter to them through innovative two-way communication, empowering them to become involved in local policing.

Identify vulnerability and risk amongst children and young people through intelligence gathering, information sharing, positive relationship building and multi-agency problem solving, particularly within schools environments, in order to prevent youth crime and victimisation in support of the Thames valley Police plan and local authorities.

Skills/Experience: The officers will be highly motivated and have a real interest in Community and Partnership working and improving the lives of young people. They will be capable of working as part of a team as well as regularly working alone within and outside schools and education establishments.

They will be require good interpersonal skills in order to develop effective relationships with partner agencies, the school staff, youth workers, and the young people themselves. The post holder must have the ability to research and solve problems and work with others to sign-post and refer individuals for specialist support and/or diversionary activities.

Principle Responsibilities:

  • **Engagement**
    Work with partner agencies including Youth Justice Services, schools, colleges and other educational establishments to identify issues of concern and opportunities to address them at the earliest point.
  • **Problem Solving**
    Carry out problem solving/crime reduction initiatives in respect of the school community, and wider young people at risk of criminality/criminal exploitation, including deploying, supporting and engaging with local, Youth Justice Services and force-led initiatives.
  • **Targeted Activity**
    Identify individuals, establishments or offences with greatest needs and target early interventions to prevent crime and noncrime, including delivery of relevant pre court disposals and supporting TVP and partner agency initiatives to address risk
    of future harms such as Op Encompass and Op Paramount.
  • **Sharing learning**
    Identify and share good practice in support of the PSHE curriculum, utilising formal and informal opportunities to increase trust and legitimacy in the police through educational and engagement activities.
  • **Child Protection**
    Participate in formal and ad hoc meetings, including child protection team meetings, Youth Justice Services panels and case conferences where appropriate, in order to share information and develop joint problem-solving strategies to reduce youth related crime and to assist in safeguarding vulnerable young people.
  • **Support/information sharing**
    Provide tactical advice to crime and non-crime incidents being investigated by colleagues or partners, such as and not limited to Youth Justice Services, support the establishment in developing their understanding and use of OOCD and when
    they can deal with incidents as per NPCC advice.
  • **Resilience**
    Provide resilience to other LCUs in order that the provision of specialist support to educational establishments remains consistent and constant during term time and school hours. To provide resilience to other LCUs to provide effective, timely
    and efficient service to Youth Justice Services.
  • **Safeguarding**
    Be alert to safeguarding issues during interactions with any member of the public. Make referrals where appropriate to the MASH and escalate concerns if urgent action is required. Keep up to date with vulnerability training.
  • **Victims Code**
    Maintain contact with victims in accordance with the Victims Code of Practice, identifying those who are most vulnerable, referring to specialist agencies when appropriate to ensure the correct level of support is provided. Where appropriate seek
    the victim’s views regarding the impact of the offence to aid a disposal decision. Update Victims once a disposal has been completed.
  • **Knowledge and Understanding**
    Keep abreast of changes to legislation and guidance pertaining to young people, offending, victims of crime and Thames Valley Police policies and procedures to ensure continual professional development. Ensuring standardisation and  consistency is maintained across Thames Valley Police.
