Acting – Inspector - Assessment & Investigation Unit

Location: Milton Keynes / Aylesbury

Expected Start Date: ASAP (Please note that start dates will be subject to impact assessment with T&R)

Expected End Date: 6 Months (Please note that end dates are subject to change and, depending on the needs of the department, may be extended or reduced)

In this role you will lead AIU teams in prioritising and investigating reported crime that does not require a fast-time deployment and, in so doing, improve the quality of service provided to victims, identify vulnerability, threat, harm and risk that would otherwise have been missed and increase our front-line policing capacity

Skills and Experience: 

  • The successful candidate will have a strong record of crime management and supervision, risk assessment, decision-making and excellent inter-personal skills. They will be responsible for delivering the effective triage and investigation of volume crime.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Provide effective and visible leadership and management to the AIU supervisors, officers and staff.
  • Monitor and manage the performance of AIU teams to ensure the efficient and effective triage and investigation of crime.
  • Drive improvements in triage, investigation, crime management, outcome and victim satisfaction performance across the AIU and wider-Force as appropriate.
  • Oversee the development (including training), appraisal and well-being of officers and staff and take all opportunities to create and maintain a positive culture through the teams.
  • Support the supervisors in ensuring that teams have manageable workloads.
  • Ensure best use is made of available technology.
  • Ensure that all parts of the triage process – including victim contact, secondary investigation, safeguarding, and the identification of series/trends – are undertaken to the highest appropriate standard and in accordance with AIU triage principles.
  • Ensure crimes are recorded accurately and are compliant with Home Office Counting rules (HOCR) and National Crime recording Standards (NCRS). File incidents in accordance with both, adhering to force policy.
  • Ensure that all parts of the investigation process – including adherence to the victim code, secondary investigation, safeguarding, and the identification of series/trends – are undertaken to the highest appropriate standard and in accordance with AIU and Endeavour principles.
  • Oversee the appropriate allocation of crimes to other departments in accordance with AIU principles; minimising those crimes re-allocated to ICR officers.11. Ensure opportunities to achieve a ‘further action taken’ outcome are acted upon where it is reasonable to do so and that victims are consulted on their preferred outcome at the earliest opportunity.
  • Engage with HQ Service Improvement, police areas, other departments and partners to identify and implement improvement opportunities.
  • Maintain personal responsibility for collection, recording, evaluation, information sharing, review, retention and disposal of information in compliance with codes of practice and Guidance in the Management of Information, information security policy, procedures and legislation.

Essential Training Prior to Appointment: 

  •  Competent in police computer systems relevant to the role (Niche, CMP and SiPO)
