An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified individual to join the South East Protected Persons Unit (SEPPU), part of the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU) hosted by Thames Valley Police on behalf of the region.

SEROCU leads the response across the region to the risk posed by serious and organised crime in Hampshire, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Thames Valley. It is committed to relentlessly disrupting these risks by using its 13 capabilities and by partnership working with the National Crime Agency, Forces and other partners.

SEROCU provides the vital link from national capabilities and expertise to local policing and knowledge, enabling the South East region to deliver the government’s Serious and Organised Crime Strategy and to protect communities from harm.

The post holder will manage the activities of the Witness Protection Unit within the South East region and in accordance with the national framework of witness protection.

Main duties include:-

• Supervise officers working on the Witness Protection Unit (WPU) both in Hampshire and with other forces when collaborative arrangements are in place
• Provide specialist advice in relation to the assessment of vulnerable persons to include those that may be suitable for the witness protection programme in accordance with the Serious and Organised Crime Act 2005.
• Manage the covert budgets applicable to the WPU.
• Ensure the safe and effective management of clients of the witness protection programme. Seek to ensure, where appropriate, the attendance of protected witnesses at criminal trials.

Applications are invited from substantive Detective Sergeants. The successful applicant will have the ability to identify and manage operational threats and risks. You will have some experience supporting victims, survivors and witnesses in managing the effects of their experience on their lives. You will also have the ability to work and participate in covert investigations.

You may be required to travel for business purposes on occasion and demonstrate flexibility regarding working hours, and you must be prepared to be security cleared to an enhanced level.

Vetting.  All posts require a level of Police Vetting as per the National Vetting Code of Practice. The residency requirement is necessary to enable all applicants to be checked in an equitable manner. Thames Valley Police will allow applicants to apply who do not necessarily reach the criteria as long as they have proven UK residency and supporting evidence where necessary.
