The South East Covert Operations Unit (SECOU) provide professional advice, operational support and guidance within the region’s constituent forces in respect of all undercover operations.

We welcome applications from substantive Police/Detective Sergeants and Detective/Police Constables seeking promotion for an exciting and rewarding opportunity to join SECOU.

You will maintain and develop the undercover online policing capability in the South East Covert Operations Unit (SECOU) as part of the National Undercover Online Working Group structure. You will provide expertise on covert online policing tactics in relation to investigations into serious & organised crime and Child Sexual Exploitation & Abuse (CSEA).

You will supervise undercover online operatives working within the team ensuring they are complying with legislative requirements whilst supporting their development through training and innovation, thus providing the best possible support to the region and partner agencies. The successful candidate may be exposed to indecent images of children and highly offensive online material while supervising CSEA operations. Applicants should carefully consider if this a tactic they wish to supervise.

Due to the role requirements, it is essential that the post holder be prepared to be security cleared to enhanced level. In line with Section 82(2) to (4) of the Police Reform Act (2002), candidates who fail to hold, acquire or maintain this vetting level cannot be offered the post.

This role is part of a national, regional and local network and as a result you may occasionally be required to travel for business purposes throughout the UK. You will be asked to demonstrate flexibility regarding working hours in line with operational demand.

All vacancies of Sergeant and above are advertised to substantive and on promotion applicants at the same time; there are different application requirements for Substantive Officers and those Officers applying for Promotion. If you wish to apply you need to have support from Head of Command / Department. Hampshire officers need to complete an AD277 alongside their application via Hampshire HR. 

Substantive officers will be shortlisted against the Essential Criteria and should submit an online application form. You will be required to upload your latest PDR (or if no PDR, a recent copy of your CPD record/Focus Feedback meeting) and a copy of your Training Record. You will be also required to upload the Recommendation for Appointment Form (enclosed with the Job Advert) in the ‘Line Managers Approval Form’.

In addition to this information, officers applying on promotion should also submit a ‘Why Me, Why Now’ letter which outlines your motivation and suitability for the role at this time. Your evidence should also demonstrate the relevant behaviours, skills, knowledge and experience in relation to your capability at this rank in accordance with the core competencies (CVF) Step up Criteria. The letter must be no more than two (2) sides of A4. The margins must not be modified from 2.54cm. All evidence outside the margins should be removed. You will also be required to upload your latest PDR (or if no PDR, a recent CPD record//Focus Feedback meeting) and the Police Officer Promotion Reference Form.
