We are currently recruiting for a Roads Policing Unit Forensic Collision Investigator, within our Joint Operations Unit (JOU), based at Aylesbury. 

As the post holder, you will provide specialist expertise in the investigation of serious and fatal collisions as defined by the College of Policing APP guidance on ‘Investigating Road Deaths’, investigate serious injury and other complex and high profile collisions and with the consent of the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and Professionals Standards department, investigate fatal or serious injury police vehicle incidents that may occur within the JOU area or another Force area.

Please note that the post holder must be prepared to take an in-Force driving test authorising him/her to drive Constabulary vehicles to an advanced level. The post also involves working outdoors. There is a requirement to wear a uniform or overalls, which are provided. There is the requirement to work unsocial hours and at weekends, and to respond to emergency call-outs, out of hours. (call out will be paid). The post holder needs to be aware that there may be the requirement to work anywhere within Thames Valley, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. There is the requirement to attend Post Mortems as directed by the Senior Investigating Officer/Unit Supervisor. The applicant will be required to provide expert evidence at Crown, Magistrates, Coroners and Civil Courts.

Job Purpose 

In this role you will be part of a small team of specialist forensic collision investigators, to provide the highest level of service to both internal and external customers in compliance of the requirements of the College of Policing guidance on ‘Investigating Road Deaths’.

Key tasks will include:

To attend and gather evidence at the following types of traffic collision: - Fatal or potential fatal traffic collisions. - Complex or serious collisions where significant and essential information is likely to be gained. - Collisions where an allegation of dangerous or careless driving is made and an examination of the scene will assist in clarifying the situation. - Police Vehicle Incidents (PVI’s) which fall into the above categories or are, in any way, contentious.

To collect, study and analyse evidence present at collision scenes and, if necessary, undertake relevant mathematical calculations in support of observations.

To prepare an accurate scene examination and other salient features of traffic collisions   To produce clear, accurate scale plans of collision sites using specialist electronic survey equipment and associated computer software programs.

To maintain a good working knowledge of the operation of Heavy Goods Vehicle digital and analogue tachographs, and have an understanding of the legislation relating to drivers’ hours in order to undertake an analysis of any chart or electronic data retrieved in order to evaluate whether legislation has been complied with.

To compile collision reconstruction files, using a range of techniques and evidence with the aim of determining the cause of collision.

To present your findings at all levels of court, when necessary.

To prepare scale drawings and 3D animations for crime enquiries, as requested.

To ensure that equipment and vehicles supplied to the Forensic Collision Investigation Unit are maintained in a safe and usable condition.

To give talks and presentations on the collision investigation function to groups from a variety of backgrounds.

To act as a tutor to officers on attachment to the Forensic Collision Investigation Unit.
