Substantive constables are invited to apply for an opportunity to train as a Surveillance officer. No previous Surveillance experience or qualifications are necessary.

This challenging, rewarding and sought after role requires applicants who can demonstrate an interest in intelligence led policing. In addition they should be willing to work in a committed and flexible way in a team environment.

Following an initial short listing, you will be invited to attend a 1 Day SECTU Pre Assessment Phase and those successful will then attend 2 day Surveillance pre-selection course at Sulhamstead.

Officers who successfully complete this phase will be progress to an interview.

Those selected will be required to complete the following;-

Applicants who are successful at interview will need to pass a

  • Foot Surveillance Course (2 weeks).

  • Advanced Driving Course (5 weeks)

  • Q1 Mobile Surveillance Course (5 weeks)

We are hoping for the pre-selection assessment to be held at the end of May 2017.

If you are unable to pass any element of the process, you will not be able to remain within the team and will be redeployed within the force or will have the opportunity to invoke your right to return to your previous force, if applicable.

It is important that you are available to complete all elements of the selection process outlined above and that your OCU/LPA/Force are prepared to release them to participate in every element of the process as and when required.  

The role of a Surveillance Officer will bring officers into direct contact with the public, there may be occasions whereby officers will need to intervene and arrest or protect people or property. Additionally the role can include occasions whereby officers are on foot for long periods of time or conversely secreted in locations whereby movement would give them away. To that end officers interested in the role would need to be of appropriate fitness. The minimum standard for those applying would be to have passed the Force Annual Fitness Test and Officer Safety Training.

Officers must be in possession of a full UK driving license. Officers will need supply a Head and Shoulders Photograph with their application. This must be uploaded with your application or e-mailed to the recruitmentse@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk.

For the purposes of safeguarding national security, applicants who do not hold or acquire appropriate security clearance and meet the nationality requirements cannot be offered the post. This post is therefore restricted to UK nationals.

Vetting.  All posts require a level of Police Vetting as per the National Vetting Code of Practice. The residency requirement is necessary to enable all applicants to be checked in an equitable manner.
