Thames Valley Police (TVP) is making a significant, multi-year investment in our Forensic Services and is transforming our wide array of forensic disciplines to create a forward looking, accredited service which delivers proportionate, timely services that support effective crime investigation for TVP and other external organisations.

As part of this transformation, an exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Forensic Investigation Unit (FIU) Leadership Team as the Forensic Laboratory Services Manager. Reporting to the Head of Analytical Forensic Services, you will be integral in managing the operational performance of accredited laboratory services, co-ordinating the delivery of a diverse range of forensic examinations, testing and analytical services across a spectrum of capabilities. In addition to operational management, you will also perform the role of Technical Manager, with overall responsibility for ensuring quality standards within the forensic laboratories, working with Technical Focal Points and Quality Technical Officers to ensure compliance in the implementation and maintenance of ISO accreditation.

The successful candidate will possess considerable experience across a broad range of forensic science laboratory disciplines, with a strong understanding of their interconnectivities and opportunities for scientific development. Demonstrating significant supervisory and performance management experience, they will also have the ability to discern risks, solve problems and make effective decisions.

Exceptional leadership attributes are an essential requirement in this role, including coaching and mentoring abilities, with effective communication and interpersonal skills. The post holder will possess the aptitude to build good business relationships with all key stakeholders and work closely with other Managers across forensic disciplines and portfolios.

The ability to understand technical details and associated risks is essential, especially in relation to health and safety, quality standards, legislative and regulatory requirements as it pertains to a laboratory environment.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the established psychological screening process. Along with all other posts in Force Crime, Intelligence and Specialist Operations Departments, this role will require an enhanced level of vetting.

This is a hybrid role with the ability to work from home for 2-3 days per week on average. Start times will be by negotiation. The post holder has a nominated base station but may be required to attend out-of-force meetings and conferences from time to time.
