The role

As a Trainee Police Controller you will need to be ready to deal with 999 and 101 calls from members of the public 24/7. Our officers need as much information as possible and you’ll have the crucial task of communicating with callers and carefully recording the details they relay. This role also includes managing radio talk groups, this means communicating with officers on the ground providing them with vital information in a timely manner. To do this you must be able to multi task and work under pressure.

As part of your initial development you will have the opportunity to complete a vocational qualification in Police Service Communication and Control accredited by SFJ Awards.

The essentials

The successful candidate will be able to assess risk and control a situation in a calm and logical manner. You must be able to communicate with a diverse range of people and obtain crucial information, often in highly challenging situations. A good aptitude to navigate IT systems is essential along with a willingness to learn bespoke in house systems. Prior to interview you will be required to take an operator test which will include the ability to type 30 words per minute. Literacy is vital along with a good standard of education.

Part-Time /Flexible Shifts are available - minimum 20 hours per week to be worked over minimum 3 days   

  • Each shift will be at least 5 - 8 hours (can be longer) 
  • Mixture of earlies/lates Sunday-Thursday between 0900- 0200, Friday & Saturday 0900-0400 or full nights on any days
  • You will be required to work 3 out of 5 weekends
  • Initial training will be delivered on a full time basis during the first 11 weeks and for a further 2 weeks and 11 weeks between approximately 5 months and 8 months in for dispatch and radio training and tutoring

If you have been interviewed and were unsuccessful for the Trainee Police Controller role you must wait six months prior to re-applying.

Please note that if your Trainee Police Controller application is successful, you will need to complete 12 months in this role before you can apply to become a Police Officer.
