Applications are invited from substantive Chief Inspectors for promotion to Superintendent rank and Superintendents seeking level transfer.

In the first instance, it is important that potential candidates discuss their application with their Chief Officer and line manager in the light of current performance, career development plans and feedback from previous applications. 

Should any potential candidate wish to have an informal conversation about ‘life as a Superintendent’ in Thames Valley Police please contact Superintendent Rory Freeman (from 5 August)  or Superintendent Mike Loebenberg who would be happy to speak or direct you to one of their Superintendents’ Association colleagues.

Summary of Application Requirements:

  • Covering letter (no more than two sides of A4) addressing the question ‘why me, why now’ and outlining your motivation and suitability for promotion against the Chief Constable’s ‘step up to Superintendent’ document and with reference to the CVF framework. (These will be included in the application pack).
  • Comment from your Chief Officer – in consultation with your line manager - on your suitability for promotion.
  • Career History and Qualifications.
  • Most recent PDR.

Selection Process:

Candidates who are supported by their Chief Officer and are endorsed at the shortlisting stage will be asked to attend an Operational Panel and a Strategic Panel as detailed below. 

The Strategic and Operational Panels will be held on the same day, one after the other.

The Panel will be making their assessment against the behaviours included in the CVF.

Operational Panel

  • The Operational Panel will be chaired by Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Christian Bunt, assisted by Detective Chief Superintendent Jim Weems and supported by Mrs Katrina Hancox, People Directorate.
  • The interview will focus on operational competency to operate at Superintendent level.
  • The Operational Panel will be provided with the written evidence contained in your application pack.
  • The Operational Panel will take place on 13, 14 and 15 September 2021.

Strategic Panel

  • The Strategic Panel will be chaired by Chief Constable John Campbell, assisted by Assistant Chief Constable Tim De Meyer and Temporary Chief Superintendent Bobbi Rai. Acting Assistant Chief Officer Christine Kirby, Director of People, will also be present to advise the Panel.
  • Candidates will be asked to give a 10 minute presentation, following a 45 minute preparation period.
  • The presentation will be followed by an interview which will address issues raised in the presentation before exploring wider topics.
  • The Strategic Panel will be provided with the written evidence contained in your application pack and an assessment from the Operational Panel.
  • The Strategic Panel will take place on 13, 14 and 15 September 2021.

Vetting.  All posts require a level of Police Vetting as per the National Vetting Code of Practice. The residency requirement is necessary to enable all applicants to be checked in an equitable manner. Thames Valley Police will allow applicants to apply who do not necessarily reach the criteria as long as they have proven UK residency and supporting evidence where necessary. Applications will be considered on a case by case basis.
