As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will be involved in the design, planning, delivery, implementation and support of infrastructure services within the Joint ICT Department of Hampshire and Thames Valley Police. You will be taking the lead on complex design and installation projects undertaking peer review including architectural review and quality assurance boards to help drive the innovation and adoption of cloud solutions and services within Joint ICT. As a senior team member, you will be required to help mentor and act as a technical escalation point for Systems Engineers to assist resolving hardware and software problems. You will be required to ensure that operational problems are identified and resolved to support delivery of agreed service levels, within the ITIL framework providing outstanding customer service and outcomes to our customers. This role could be carried out remotely, with the occasional requirement for travel to Hampshire Constabulary and Thames Valley Police offices. 

Professional skills required: 

  • Demonstrate excellent troubleshooting skills to investigate, diagnose, and rectify issues relating to Infrastructure Services.
  • Able to understand and articulate how the application of ICT technology impacts the organisation, business objectives and processes, ideally within policing or public sector.
  • Able to achieve significant outcomes through influence and persuasion rather than through direct line authority.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, customer focused, who is a flexible, adaptable, problem solver and able to work systematically within a team and with little direct supervision.
  • Must have capability to travel to different locations across both Forces and undertake all assignments in a timely manner. For this reason a full UK driving licence is considered essential.

 

Main duties:

  • Providing 3rd line support for IBM Storage and CommVault Backup solutions across an enterprise environment.
  • Provide technical input for specific storage and backup needs or objectives in order to meet business requirements.
  • Managing and configuring server backup policies and schedules.
  • Organisation and reporting on the health of enterprise storage and backup solutions.
  • Evaluating alternative approaches to current practice and reporting recommendations to the leadership team.
  • Responsible for the operational excellence and maintaining uptime and availability of storage and backup services.
  • Troubleshoot incidents across all aspects of the IT server infrastructure, including leveraging technical tools to analyse issues.
  • Support and train peers and junior engineers in your area of expertise.

 

Essential skills required:

  • Strong experience of CommVault Archive, Governance and administration technology
  • Strong experience of IBM V7000 and V5000 series devices
    • Able to setup and configure new storage devices
    • Perform SAN fabric based zoning as per best practices
    • Troubleshoot any connectivity issues between storage and hosts.
    • Metro/Global mirror replication setup
    • Storage pool configuration, LUN creation as per force standards
    • Perform firmware upgrades on Storage systems and SAN fabric switches to maintain force lifecycle management.
  • Familiar with Lenovo SAN technologies.
  • Must have experience in the management of enterprise storage and backup environments, including monitoring and reporting on health.
  • Practical experience in the support and maintenance of a large Windows Server estate, in a multi-domain environment, hosted on VMware vSphere and Microsoft Azure.
  • Must have strong communication skills including experience in communicating to Senior Management level.
  • Ability to produce high quality technical documentation including;
    • Standard operating procedures
    • Knowledge base articles
    • Detailed troubleshooting documentation
  • Experience working in an ITIL focussed environment with a good understanding of the incident, service request and change management processes.

Desirable technical skills:

  • Experience of building, configuring and maintaining Lenovo physical servers, Lenovo Flex nodes, Lenovo Flex chassis and VMware/Azure virtual servers, including the installation and configuration of VMware ESXi and Windows Server 2016/ 2019.
  • Experience of cloud storage services, including data transfer solutions, preferably with Microsoft Azure.
