Cloud solutions, Automatic Number Plate recognition systems, Crown Prosecution e-files, virtual desktop infrastructure… gone are the days when IT was seen as a ‘support function’. IT is a critical enabler at Thames Valley Police, a constantly evolving entity that delivers tangible solutions to combat crime. As we combine our expertise with Hampshire Constabulary, we’re also doubling our user base, challenges and scope. If you want a role with a genuine sense of purpose, a more interactive and engaging experience, and a unique opportunity to shape our future technology - we believe you’ve found it.

The role

Your task will be to undertake the day-to-day operation and control of all aspects of the Forces’ wide area and local area communications network infrastructure. You will be required to use network management tools to determine network load and performance statistics to support delivery and monitoring of agreed service levels in support of the ICT strategy. You will need to create reports and proposals for improvement to support delivery of agreed service levels and continuous improvement to support business needs. It is essential to identify and resolve operational problems, implement the agreed network changes and maintenance routines to support delivery of agreed service levels. You will be expected to mentor network engineers to ensure a consistent best practice approach is adopted within the technical specialism.

The essentials
• Able to understand how IT networks impact the organisation, business objectives and processes, ideally within policing.

• Able to articulate technical designs and principles to a non-technical audience.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Able to work in a customer focused environment and part of a team.  Must be flexible, adaptable, and able to solve problems while working systematically with little direct supervision.

• Detailed understanding of Networking protocols and standards.
• Recent experience with VMware NSX solution.
• Must have capability to travel to different locations across both Forces. For this reason a full UK driving licence is considered essential.
