We are seeking to recruit two experienced employment lawyers on a locum basis to cover for maternity leave. The assignment is expected to last approx 12 -14 months and the successful candidates will join a small specialist employment team within legal services. Flexible working hours are available. Fixed Term Contract may also be available.

The role

Thames Valley Police is a large and progressive forward thinking employer in Oxfordshire. We are seeking to recruit two experienced employment lawyers on a locum basis commencing July/August 2019 for 12 – 14 months due to maternity leave. The post holder will be based at force HQ in Kidlington which has good road and rail networks and parking available on site.

The successful candidate will have at least 2 years post qualification experience of solid employment law experience. They should be able to demonstrate experience of managing their own case load with a focus upon employment tribunals, early conciliations, advisory work in relation to employment law issues such as TUPE, all aspects of discrimination law and change management. Working under the direction of the Employment Law Manager as part of a small and friendly team within Legal Services. You will be a proactive lawyer and able to manage your own caseload and deliver effective employment law advice to senior managers and HR professionals in a clear and technically adept manner.

Applicants welcome from Claimant and Respondent lawyers and whilst public sector experience is desirable it is not essential. Private sector and in house lawyers are also invited to apply.

The requirements

A professional legal qualification and current practising certificate as a Solicitor, Barrister or Legal Executive you will have:

  • case management skills in relation to Employment Tribunal proceedings;
  • excellent drafting and negotiating skills;
  • the ability to advise senior managers and HR professionals on a range of employment law issues;
  • the ability to work using their own initiative and deliver clear, concise and effective advice on all aspects of employment law, its impact and application;
  • excellent inter-personal skills;
  • the ability and commitment to promote equality and diversity in working practices;
  • excellent PC skills;
  • the role will entail occasional travel throughout the Thames Valley Region and attendance at ET’s in London, Cambridge, Watford and Reading
