Volunteer - Independent Advisory Group (IAG) Members (Forcewide)
Thames Valley Police LPA's (local policing areaa) are recruiting members of the community for local Independent Advisory Groups (IAG) to help develop a better understanding of the areas by questioning or challenging our practices in a constructive way - would it suit you?
An Independent Advisory Group is a panel of volunteers who are committed to working with the police for the benefit of the whole community, providing independent advice to the police about policing matters. The aim of the IAG is to improve the quality of policing by being the critical link between the community and the police. IAG members provide advice to help recognise the diverse policing needs of communities and deliver a fair service that secures greater trust and confidence.
This is an opportunity for the people of the Thames Valley to put themselves forward to be the ‘critical friend’ – constructively advice and challenge local policies, procedures and practices, helping to constantly improve service delivery to all sections of the communities.
We would like to encourage people from all walks of life to put their names forward and think about getting involved to work with us to keep the Thames Valley a safe place to work, live and bring up families.
We wish to seek members from a variety of communities and backgrounds to seek to reflect the array of communities we serve.
We are looking for volunteers who are not connected to the police service in any way and who don't already have access to channels for having their say on policing. You don't need any qualifications or experience, just the willingness to have a voice in your community.
Main duties: IAGs will consider local issues including critical incidents, operational practices and planning and, the local impact of decisions around force policy and procedure. Remember you don't need any specialist qualifications - just an interest in your local area.
Meeting times: The group may meet every three months at local community venues, occasionally at a police station. Members would have to commit to regular attendance. The unpredictable nature of policing means that occasionally, members may also be called if specific issues arise.
Making a real difference: As a member of our panel you will be vital in giving us an impartial view and opinion on a variety of issues. Although we cannot always act on everything, we will always value your ideas and thoughts.

As a volunteer within the police service, you will be subjected to a level of police vetting. The level will be dependent upon the role and it’s access requirements. With the higher levels of vetting, applicants could be asked to provide details of family members, partner, partner’s parents and co-residents, as well as additional information regarding their own personal circumstances. This process is required to ensure that Thames Valley Police comply with the legislation of the Vetting Code of Practice
Whilst we endeavour to complete all vetting within 30 working days of receipt of vetting forms, unfortunately this is not always the case due to operational demand and back-logs, and could take considerably longer.

All posts require a level of Police Vetting as per the National Vetting Code of Practice. The residency requirement is necessary to enable all applicants to be checked in an equitable manner. Thames Valley Police will allow applicants to apply who do not necessarily reach the criteria as long as they have proven UK residency and supporting evidence where necessary. Applications will be considered on a case by case basis.
