Permanent

The South East Regional Cyber Crime Unit sets out to tackle both cyber-dependent crime and the most complex and serious cyber-enabled crime. The Unit is made up of the Cyber Pursue Team, Cyber Protect and Prevent capabilities.

The Cyber Prevent role arises from the National Cyber Security Strategy. Cyber Prevent aims to identify, deter and divert the next generation of young people before they become serious cyber criminals. Somewhat uniquely, the SEROCU Cyber Prevent team also engage post-conviction with those investigated by the Cyber Pursue teams. Cyber Prevent work is delivered under the public branding of ‘Cyber Choices’ to reflect the early intervention and positive intent of the strategy.

We welcome applicants from Police Constables for an exciting opportunity to join our South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU).

Please note: No deep technical knowledge or specific experience in dealing with cybercrime are required as full training will be given in these areas. The core skills required for this role can be met by candidates with a variety of backgrounds including neighbourhood policing, schools liaison, intelligence, offender management, etc.

The PC Cyber Prevent Officer will be joining a team responsible for:

  • Subject identification, risk assessment, education around the law and (where appropriate) ongoing subject management in partnership with others
  • Undertaking subject debriefs (with another Cyber Prevent Officer) to secure cyber intelligence and a better understanding of cybercrime offending, including the pathway to becoming a cyber-criminal
  • Educating partners including schools, youth offending services, the national probation service, local policing and Counter-Terrorism Policing about the Cyber Prevent programme in order to increase referrals to the team
  • Creating innovative projects and campaigns to reach large scale audiences or identify new candidates
  • Working with national partners including the National Crime Agency and other Regional Organised Crime Units to create new diversionary activities to reduce risk

We are seeking a candidate with great communication skills and the ability to speak to a broad range of people. The successful candidate will have some experience during their career in investigation, intelligence and interviewing skills.

Full training will be given around computing and cybercrime, which can be started at a fairly basic level if required. A keen interest in learning and technology is essential.

The successful candidate will work across the South-East region and may be required to drive around the region to deliver some activities, therefore the successful candidate must have a full UK driving licence. The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a significant switch in working and the majority of partnership engagement is now delivered online.

At SEROCU, we are committed to better reflect the communities that we serve.  We encourage applications from our under represented communities including all ethnic or religious backgrounds, LGBTQ+, women and those with disabilities.

Due to the role requirements, it is essential that the post holder be prepared to be security cleared to enhanced level.
