Thames Valley Police is the largest non-metropolitan Force in England and Wales, covering the counties of Oxfordshire, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire and serving a population of in excess of 2 million. Thames Valley polices the large towns of Reading, Slough and Milton Keynes as well as the historic city of Oxford. Our forward looking approach has already led to the in-sourcing of selected forensic services including the establishment of central laboratory facilities for both biological screening and footwear examinations.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Forensic Investigation Unit as a Forensic Examiner (Biology) in the Forensic Screening Unit to provide expertise and forensic intelligence in order to contribute to the detection of crime.

The successful candidate will conduct detailed forensic examinations, ensuring adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (in particular ISO 17025). A good working knowledge and experience of working in a quality environment is required along with the ability to prepare reports and evidential statements and present evidence at Court when required. Good written and verbal communication skills are therefore essential. When suitably experienced, you will attend serious and major crime scenes to provide expertise and technical assistance to the Crime Scene Manager. The post holder must be able to deal with stress and be able to organise and prioritise the competing demands on their time. A full UK driving licence is essential.

Candidates will be educated to at least degree level in a scientific subject, and ideally have experience of presenting specialist evidence within the Criminal Justice system. Starting salary will be dependent on level of experience.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the established psychological screening process.

Along with all other posts in Force Crime, Intelligence and Specialist Operations Departments, this role will require an enhanced level of vetting.
